The first major advance came in late 1966, and it was an exciting one: the hot 911S -- "S" for Super. The Porsche Carrera RS 3.0 was an amazing performer by mid-1970s standards, and it's not too shabby even now. Journalist/race driver Paul Frere tested one for Road & Track and recorded a 124-mph average over 78 miles of fast Italian autostrada. (more…)

The Porsche 944 was a high performance sports car produced by German auto manufacturer Porsche. It was introduced in 1982 to replace the Porsche 924 as their entry level model, although the 924 continued until 1988 as an even lower-priced alternative. Production ended in 1991 when it was replaced by the Porsche 968. The 944 was a huge success for Porsche throughout the 1980s, and was available in several forms throughout its evolution: 944, 944S, 944 Turbo, 944S2, and the 944 Turbo S. (more…)

Porsche constructed a total of 2562 912 Targas, less than 8 percent of all 912s.  While Porsche was discontinuing the 356 cabriolet model in 1965, a Targa® prototype was shown at the 1965 Frankfurt Motor Show.  Porsche's Targa assembly line started in December 1966, producing the first ten 911 Targas, and at least three 912 Targas.  912 Targas cost more than the coupes, but provided 'air conditioning' without reducing engine performance.  (more…)
